Conclusion
The results of this study indicates by utilizing Superior Waterproof Coatings liquid polymer rubber membrane (GreyWall / Code Blue) and Dow Chemical rigid insulation will result in significant savings in heating cost.
This study shows that when the basement is completely enclosed from footing to the foundation sill, there are significant savings. Once conditions stabilize, (generally within the second year) there will be a 30% to 50% savings in heating cost. The ground level Basement Envelope System also provides a slightly lower heat savings than the Full Basement Envelope System. To see total heat savings for both Basement Envelope Systems, refer to Chart C10.
The introduction of Geothermal heating into the concrete floor slab will contribute to a reduction in heating costs and eliminate the need for a sub floor. The reduction in humidity levels will help keep mould and bacteria growth in check and improve living conditions within existing basements. Clients expressed that within a few months after installing Superior Waterproof Coatings Basement Envelope System they could once again use their basement area for additional living space.
During the study, one family used the basement of Test Home AA@ to hand wash and drip dry clothes for a family of four. Although this increased interior basement humidity levels during their time of occupancy, humidity levels soon dropped and stabilized upon their departure.
Geothermal heating was evident in both Test Homes but it was slightly higher in Test Home AA@ because of the depth of the basement. Thermal heating has also contributed to the reduction in heating cost.
The Full Basement Envelope System allows for the reduction of concrete core humidity in the basement walls and this shows that the in flow of humidity into the concrete wall is eliminated. This allows for the drying of the concrete wall which provides for reduced heating cost, lower humidity and mould reduction.
Overall this study indicates Superior Waterproof Coatings Full Basement Envelope System will dramatically improve home performance and produce results exceeding that of any basement system currently used in the construction industry today.
